Job Description: Part-Time Highway Coordinator

Position Overview

The Town of Ellington is establishing the formal position of Highway Coordinator to oversee the maintenance, repair, and safe operation of the Town’s roads, rights-of-way, and related infrastructure. This part-time role combines hands-on field work with administrative responsibilities, vendor management, and seasonal staff oversight. The Highway Coordinator reports directly to the Town Board and provides monthly updates on highway operations and needs.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform and oversee day-to-day road maintenance activities, including snow plowing, grading, patching, mowing, and culvert and signage upkeep.
  • Supervise and schedule seasonal employees for snow removal, mowing, and other road-related tasks.
  • Manage the highway department budget in coordination with the Town Board, including purchasing materials, supplies, and equipment (fuel, salt, repairs, etc.).
  • Coordinate and oversee work performed by outside vendors and contractors.
  • Maintain town equipment, ensuring proper use, service, and repairs.
  • Develop seasonal work plans for road maintenance, mowing, snow removal, and other projects.
  • Respond to emergency situations such as storms, flooding, or road hazards; serve in an on-call capacity when needed.
  • Attend Town Board meetings at least once a month to provide status updates, budget information, and recommendations.
  • Maintain accurate records, logs, and reports of maintenance activities, costs, and schedules.
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable Wisconsin SPS requirements and local ordinances.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Valid Wisconsin Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).
  • Demonstrated ability and experience in operating and maintaining heavy equipment (plow trucks, graders, loaders, tractors, etc.).
  • Basic computer skills for recordkeeping, scheduling, and communication.
  • Ability to plan, organize, and supervise part-time/seasonal employees.
  • Ability to be on-call during weather events and emergencies.

 Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in highway, road, or municipal maintenance.
  • Prior supervisory or lead worker experience in public works, construction, or similar fields.
  • Knowledge of municipal budgeting and purchasing practices.

Working Conditions

This is a part-time, hourly position. Hours are flexible and based on seasonal needs, weather conditions, and Town priorities. Outdoor work in all weather conditions is required. The position involves lifting, operating heavy equipment, and responding to urgent situations outside of normal hours.

Compensation

Hourly wage to be determined by the Town Board and will be set in consideration of experience and responsibilities. No benefits are provided with this position.
